I see these ads all the time on CL, and I just don’t understand the logic. Here is a guy, trying to get something for free in the very same place where it is being sold for cash. His sales pitch? Essentially, ‘you should do me for free because I have no clue what it’s all about.’

On a side note… it seems that prostitution is the last place left where racism is socially acceptable.

Tennessee Turncoat?

March 14, 2007

Discussions of LE tactics are pretty frequent on the pooner forums. When the topic comes up, it’s not uncommon to see somebody theorizing about how a provider could be ‘turned’ — coerced into working for vice detectives. I’ve always scoffed at the idea. Not anymore.

We all remember last November’s big sting in Seattle. Those who follow closely know that not only were the police using CLRB to gather intelligence, they even went so far as to post a phony shill review to smooth the way for their decoy. (Yes, that’s right… the woman in the photos is a police officer.) As intimidating as it was, at the time we all took comfort in the knowledge that we would be safe as long as we stuck with known providers.

But in Nashville, TN, it might have actually happened. Police are being coy about it, but they want hobbyists to at least think that they may have drafted a snitch. ‘Can’t happen here,’ you say? Don’t be so sure. And if it ever does, participation on a review forum will no longer be a tool; it will become a liability.

Pwned

February 18, 2007

A coupla days ago, I blogged a bit about this story, an expose of the Craigslist prostitution scene by a local TV station in Salt Lake City. The story prominently features one of those anonymous, ‘in the shadows’ interviews with a prostitute, whose name was given as Eva. It occurred to me on the first read-through that we have an Eva up here in this neck of the woods, who also happens to have long, curly blond hair, just like the woman in the interview. I thought that maybe — just maybe — it could be the same woman, but the chances seemed too remote and there wasn’t an easy way to tie our Eva to the woman in the story.

It turns out that there is no need for sleuthing, now that Courtesan Eva of Portland has stepped forward to take credit.

You know folks… it’s one thing to be a whore. It’s another thing altogether to be an attention whore. Especially when being an attention whore also involves being a traitor.

(Notice that I didn’t use — and won’t be using — the word ‘courtesan’. Make no mistake about it, we are discussing a prostitute here.)

Had this been a story about prostitutes as victims of the system or victims of violent crime… I wouldn’t have an issue. Had this been a story about an effort to reform prostitution laws… I wouldn’t have an issue. Had this been almost anything other than a cheap-shot — a hit piece designed to stir up public outrage against the Hobby — I wouldn’t have an issue.

But that’s exactly what this was. It was nothing but an anti-hobby public awareness message, designed to generate outraged calls and letters to SLC’s police and politicians. The story said very little of substance, other than to tell the people of SLC that there is a ‘problem’. And clearly, Eva is all but giddy for having had a chance to help the Dark Side.

I can hear her now… “You mean I’ll be on TV? Really?!” Because clearly, that’s all that mattered to her — being the center of attention. Any resulting consequences for her peers in SLC were of no importance because, as she stated on TNA, she had already decided that she was leaving the area and not coming back.

Quite frankly, I’m amazed that she got through the interview without throwing in, “Oh, and by way… did I mention that I’m part of the 12% of all women who, uh… squirt?”

And now, she’s sooo full of herself that she thinks she’s going to write a book. You’re not going to write a book, sweetie… you’re not an author, you’re a hooker!

The Jihad Continues

February 16, 2007

There are really only two possible explanations for this kind of reporting. Either the media is clueless, ignorant and out of touch; or they have an agenda. I’m having trouble figuring out which it is. It might be interesting, though, to know a little about the ownership of this TV station (KUTV in SLC), and whether or not they also just happen to own any print newspapers. That would explain a lot.

This just in… the Bellingham Herald reports that three people have been arrested on prostitution-related charges stemming from an investigation of ads placed on Craigslist. Not a big sting, to be sure, but in a small market such as Bellingham, three arrests are probably equivalent to ten times that number in a market like metropolitan Seattle.

Notable features of this story: one arrestee accused of being a prostitute, whose full name was published, was pegged as a Seattle resident. Also, the story mentions that another arrestee will be charge with promoting prostitution in connection with a specific ad. Yes, evidently in Bellingham the police are actually ‘walking the talk’, by taking down a pimp instead of just blustering about how bad they are.

Do as I say, not as I do

February 11, 2007

Whoever said “you can take the girl out of the street but you can’t take the street out of the girl” must have know what they were talking about. WBAY-TV of Green Bay, WI reports that a woman picked up in a prostitution sting last week was none other than the founder of a Christian ministry targeted at newly released convicts.

Ann Schrader, 46, is herself an ex-convict who did time for ‘keeping a house of prostitution’ and drug charges before founding StretcherBearer Ministries in 2004. The unwritten subtext here is that, as an ex-con, she stands to suffer more severe consequences than your average hooker would. Although, it might be interesting to see if her ‘ministerial work’ carries any weight with the court at sentencing (assuming, of course, that she is convicted or pleads guilty).

Oh, and that sting she was caught up in? You guessed it… it was an ‘Internet sting’ (read: Craigslist).

More Old News

February 8, 2007

The mainstream media’s economically-motivated jihad against Craigslist continues, in all of its glorious absurdity. This time it is TMJ4-TV in Milwaukee, WI that is breathlessly reporting the five-year-old story of rampant prostitution advertising on — what must be by now — the world’s best-known sex marketplace.

As a rule, each one of these that I find is just a little bit more ridiculous than the one before, and this particular specimen is no exception. Check out this preposterous statement:

People can post classified ads on craigslist for anyone to see. TODAY’S TMJ4 found more than 100 ads for call girls in our area. They show photos, prices, even local phone numbers.

Police departments are on top of the problem.
(Emphasis added.)

Did you catch that? Oh, yes! The police are sooo all over this.

Sheee-it.

That’s a serious question. Could this be real? I have to shake my head and wonder, but sadly… it probably is. After all, a lot of these girls, if they were a little smarter (or a little less addicted to drugs… or a little less deranged… or not trying so hard to dodge child support… or… or…), would be working in real jobs.

OK, so I have two observations here:

  1. This lady does NOT really want us to go look for her on CLRB. She is known there as one of the most notorious flakes of all time. (Search: Brittany Luv, and see for yourself)
  2. Please, PLEASE tell me that she isn’t offering duos with the other female in the photos.

And what the FUCK is up with that last photo?

Is it just me? Or is it getting warm in here? (hat tip: travis5572)

The vice goons have been at it again, this time in Beaverton, OR. (Lovely name for a city, I must say.) And, as usual, there is a hidden subtext: evidently, professional standards among PDX providers are slipping. It took a whole week just to set up nine sessions.

BEAVERTON — An undercover police sting netted nine women on charges they posted online ads for prostitution.

Investigators found the ads on Craigslist under ‘erotic services’ and made calls in the past week. Officers arranged to meet the women at a local motel, where the suspects were arrested.

That’s a pretty crappy track record. Apparently, the Beaverton P.D. wasn’t giving due diligence to their research.

Also, I’m really disappointed in KGW News. Last time around, they had mug shots of some really cute providers. Who knows? Maybe the Beaverton girls are less, uh, newsworthy.

UPDATE: The mug shots are in, and my first guess wasn’t too far off the mark. Compared to the Salem girls (link is above), these ladies from Beaverton are scary. (hat tip: lydia)

This item is here in The Petulant Pooner for two reasons:

I’ve been saying for a while now that the mainstream media is conducting a crusade against Craigslist for economic reasons, but this time around I have to admit… the story in question is actually newsworthy, even if the motivation for printing it is questionable. How come? Well, for one thing, the alleged prostitute who has been busted and accused of advertising his services on CL is a man. (Is it sexist to say that this makes the story newsworthy? I guess it is, isn’t it? So sue me.)

But the real kicker, to my mind, is what the story says inadvertently: that there really wasn’t any reason to bother this guy.

One neighbor seemed surprised but unfazed.

“It doesn’t bother me, but it is very shocking,” said Rob Fox. “I never suspected something like that, especially walking by here every day.”

So tell me again… just exactly how was this guy hurting the neighborhood?

I want to thank this guy for making me laugh. Good stuff, this.

Yes, I moderate my comments. Don’t like it? Eat shit and die. If yours didn’t get published, it was probably lacking any evidence of intelligent authorship. Maybe someday I’ll put up a comment policy, not that it would help.

I have to admit, these guys make an excellent case against themselves. Seniors get special treatment (indeed, the moderators bully providers for freebies), and so it follows that many of their reviews aren’t very credible.

Senior Specials Board
OK it’s obvious from that thread in the lounge that (at least in Seattle) the providers are not very enthused. I don’t blame them if they’re weekly schedule is full. It sure would be great if ALL providers could market their services to Senior Members on the board. The new providers are the ones who could benefit the most and might be the most aggressive in advertising their services. After all they need reviews to bolster business and build a client base and Seniors obviously tend to write reviews instead of lurk. Seems like a win-win situation…

Re: Senior Specials BoardA new provider can always include a special rate for seniors in her ad in the regular section. Sometimes a senior will post a special on behalf of a new provider that he has seen. Once a new lady gets a good review from a respected senior her call volume will probably pickup. That’s a win-win too.

I think it would be a bad move for a new provider to advertise a Senior Member special on the general board. Wouldn’t sit well with the other members. Being able to post directly to the Senior Members almost assures her of getting reviews.

i agree on this point. and also, what’s to say that a non-senior might use a seniors name with a new girl. i’d like to think that the “general population” doesn’t know about the senior specials.

Re: Senior Specials BoardHey! How about the shitstorm I started w00t!

Interestingly enough, the providers who seem to offer the most opportunities for seniors in Portland are mostly very well established.

Maybe the girls in Seattle don;t need the seniors business, but I would think they’d see the value of some good will from time to time.

Doyle, I like your comments about value vs. price. I’ve had this conversation with providers before and few seem to get it. While I like to pay as little as possible for anything, I always look for value before price. When they combine to give me a great deal that is optimal.

LBNL, you’re right again. It ain’t a special unless it is indeed somehow special!

Re: Senior Specials BoardI’m all for it.

I agree that posting Senior Specials on the general board is not the answer, for several reasons.

I would also stipulate that the specials actually BE special, AND that the terms of the special be clearly set forth IN THE AD.

There are numerous potential unstated advantages for newer providers. I suppose it would be an OK thing for Seniors as well

Established providers might not like it, though; it could encourage competition. Should that keep it from happening?

Just an idea…

I have seen no resistance from the Established providers so far. In fact, the ones who I thought would whine, seem to support it on the surface. I wonder if it had something to do with my pre-emptive comment about competition in the Lounge. Maybe not.

As far as introducting “undesirables” into the mix, don’t we already have riff-raff here? Rules and research still apply in the long run. Positives far outweigh negatives in this case.

So, should we all sign a petition or joint request to send to TEK? Other ideas to get this implemented?

If you are moderately aware of what is going on in the world (i.e., you make it a point to look at some news on a regular basis), you probably know that there was a small-potatoes prostitution bust in Chicago this week that was propelled into the national limelight because it involved Craigslist.

Prostitution stings are, by and large, about as newsworthy as a dead cat in the road — it happens all the time and nobody really cares. You really don’t have something that merits significant ink until you add more ingredients. Large numbers of arrestees, a la Seattle, might be one such factor — but the Chicago story involves exactly two people who were arrested. Underage prostitutes can warrant coverage, as well, but that usually means filler material for the tail end of the local crime news, or maybe one of those ‘look-isn’t-this-tragic’ human interest features.

But if you add a reference to Craigslist, now you have high-flying stuff, and something to add to the Old Media’s growing crusade against a competing enterprise that is costing them revenue.

You also have a classic example of the reason why the credibility of television news outlets is just barely north of tabloid rags like the National Enquirer. To illustrate what I am talking about, here’s an excerpt from the version of the story that Chicago’s ABC affiliate ran:

“It also shows the level of sophistication of street gang members who are running criminal enterprises using the internet and other forms of technology,” said Dart.

At Montrell Knight’s home, police say they recovered nine weapons, including an AK47-type assault rifle, a shotgun used in the Spanish-American War, and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition including military grade assault weapons ammunition. They also recovered 90 grams of crack cocaine.

“Knight is an integral member of the Gangster Disciples, and when they needed weapons they would go to him. We believe Knight’s apartment was used as a safe house to store drugs and weapons for gang members on the West Side,” said Dart.

Give us a fucking break. Using Craigslist to run an escort operation is hardly rocket science. Hell, just about any ho can do it. Neither does possession of a few stolen firearms turn a collection of a few thugs into a “sophisticated” organized crime operation. To the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times, the real story here is that there were some high-school-aged girls being pimped on the Internet. It shouldn’t be big-time news, but at least the print dinosaurs managed to maintain their focus. But if you depend on WLS-TV for your news, you are now at risk of believing that the evil Gangster Disciples are about to start setting up IEDs on Michigan Avenue.

It used to be that just the talking heads were dumb. Now it’s the editorial staff, too.

One final note. While the print media has their collective panties in a bunch because the free ads on CL — for everything from garage sales to hookers — are helping to slowly put them out of business, the authorities are much more blasé when it comes to the pimping of children:

On Dec. 31, they responded to an ad describing a woman in her late teens and were instructed to go to a home in the 5300 block of West Potomac Avenue. There they met a female who agreed to perform a sex act for $200, police said.

The girl, who was arrested, was 16. Officers entered the apartment and arrested Tamera Cotton, 25, who was charged with keeping a place of prostitution and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Cotton was released after posting $100 bail, police said.

I dunno, I suppose it could be because the alleged pimp is female (which normally rates preferential treatment in sex crime investigations), but doesn’t $100 bail seem just a trifle low for a felony where a minor child is the victim?

Let’s face it — the majority of the people walking around out there are pretty fucking stupid. Need proof? Just look at the fallout that was floating around after the November CL sting. The vice goons were able to arrest over 100 people that they simply would not have been able to touch if only they had acted like they had IQs that were at least in the low triple-digits. Indeed, even many of those people could have been saved a great deal of trouble and expense if certain other people had been a little smarter, as well.

And now, we have CL ads like this one. I can understand the regret and the desire to expose the bad actors. But, still being the same idiot that he was last fall, the guy who posted this is going after the wrong target. Dude, can’t you figure it out? You got rolled by one of your own who was co-operating with the other side.

Well, now that the big SPD Craigslist sting is over
and we’ve been charged for our crimes against humanity,
maybe it’s time to compare notes.

I’m gathering information about this sting and
I’m curious about the following things:

1. What did they tell you to intimidate out of posting information about the sting?
2. Did the police report of your arrest contain any inaccuracies?
3. Were they willing to provide real evidence from the 4 video cameras they used?
4. Are you interested in joining any efforts to expose their tactics to the public?
5. Anything else you want to share.

I plan to post some kind of summary at least on craigslist and possibly in a newspaper in the hopes of getting some kind of balanced perspective on the “morals” or the SPD vice squad.
I will not keep email names or anything else (believe me, i understand your wishes for privacy).

Of course, if editorial ineptitude isn’t enough to make a news organization look silly, displaying straight-up ignorance of a story’s subject matter is a sure-fire winner. I’m glad that I ran across this story in the evening — had it been morning, I might have spilled some coffee. Be sure to set down any hot liquids that you might be holding before you read this statement from an ABC News feature about Craig Newmark.

Newmark has, however, encountered a few scams, ads for prostitution rings…

Wow! Craig ran across some ads for prostitution rings? On Craigslist? For real?

Get out of town!

This is News?

January 3, 2007

I am now more convinced than ever that there is a serious shortage of competent editors in our nation’s newsrooms. Witness this news non-story out of Bakersfield, CA.

BAKERSFIELD – You may have used the popular website Craig’s List to buy furniture, sell a car, or find a place to live, but thousands of Kern County residents are using CraigsList to purchase something of the erotic persuasion.

Nine-thousand Kern County residents used CraigsList Tuesday, some of them buying a vehicle, home essentials, and the others looking to pay for sex.

And that’s pretty much it. There is no report of a sting, no report of any specific crime. It’s just a fluff piece to let us all know that Bakersfieldians (heh, I made that up) are swarming to Craigslist in relatively large numbers, many of them looking for sex (and finding it).

I looked everywhere for the fine print that says ‘Paid Advertisement’, and I couldn’t find it. But that’s all it is — it’s just a shill for Craigslist, letting all the horny guys know that most hookers aren’t on the streets anymore, because they’re online.

Craig Newmark, media darling

How does he do that?

Isn’t it amazing? All it takes for Nina to change from an infamous, inveterate ROB into a brand new, sexy Secret Agent Girl is… a pair of cheap sunglasses!

It’s tempting to say, “Cripes, she must think we are stupid or something.” Trouble is, there’s enough of you losers out there who really are stupid to keep her in ‘business’ forever.

"Pimp’s Up, Ho’s Down"

December 21, 2006

I’m guessing that just a handful of my readers (perhaps just a few dozen out of the more than 4000 of you) visit the comment threads, so most of you would not be aware that I have been visited by an anonymous serial commenter who takes issue with my contemptuous attitude towards pimps. Indeed, the comments that she leaves (Yes, it appears to be a ‘she’. More on that below.) suggest rather strongly that we are to think the author is a pimp. It started a day or so after I posted my personal agenda for blogging, which included a strongly worded, anti-pimp message. The first comment was really just asking for clarification:

At December 15, 2006 3:54 PM, Anonymous said…

So then Should Allie be killed? Essentially she’s pimping out Fiona and Leilani.

This was the first I had ever heard of Allie, but it wouldn’t be the last time that the name would come up. Eventually I would learn that Allie is the front person, supposedly a ‘madam’, for a local agency. But that information would come later, as well as some serious doubt about its veracity.

The comments continued over the next few days, and there was another mention of Allie, plus another agency operator named Scarlett (Fantasy City), among the ghetto verbiage that begged for me to believe that “this is a pimp talking”. Eventually this escalated to a defamatory post on Craigslist Erotic Services, just last night, which you can read in the next post down. By this time, it was all beginning to feel a little repetitious. Once again, for your convenience, here is the text of the CL post:

Ladies this man is very dangerous. He think pimps should be killed. Including female agency owners. He said this regarding Allie “If she’s pimping in the classical sense… you betcha.” He posted that on his blog. Ladies please be careful, Seattle PD is already begining to investigate him. If you have anything to add please forward all information regarding him to the Seattle PD.

(Emphasis added.)

There’s that name again. By this point, I’m getting curious — who the hell is Allie? Time to do some checking. I found out a little more than I bargained for.

It turns out that Allie is, at least ostensibly, the operator of a small Seattle-area escort service known as Seattle Encounters, or alternately as Priceless Possessions. Both links open the same website, and — lo and behold — there you will find the aforementioned Fiona and Leilani.

I took the text from the CL ad and also from the two longest blog comments, and ran it through The Gender Genie, a tool designed to detect whether the author of a text is male or female. The results were not especially decisive, but did show consistently that the writer is female. Could this be a pimp? Or was it Allie herself?

So if it was a pimp, why would he turn out as such an angry shill in defense of a competing agency? “Hmm”, I thought, “maybe this isn’t the entire story.” So off I went to the Washington Department of Revenue business license database, to do some more checking. And what I found was rather interesting. I found a pimp.

Tempting as it may be, I’m not going to publish his information here. But, if you are the curious sort, you now have everything you need to discover his name and home address (at the Jackson Park Apartments, in Seattle). Run one of the business names above through the DOR, and you will have the name of the man who is at the controls of what has been presented to the local pooning community as an all-female agency. It’s all in the public record.

And so, all of this raises — at least in my mind — some troubling questions. Clearly, Allie did exist at one point, but is she still around? Are providers relying on this guy for reference checks, not knowing who they are dealing with? And does the male pimp who owns the agency have access to the back-channel network upon which the providers depend for their safety?

And who — hobbyist or provider — wants to deal with an asshole who would say, publicly, “Pimps’ up, Ho’s down”?

It is now confirmed… I have truly arrived! But, I have a question…

Who the FUCK is Allie?

By the way… yes, I still think pimps should be killed. Two caps in the dome — POP! POP!

Now, if you will excuse me — I am expecting officers from the SPD any moment now, and I simply must run out to buy donuts!

Are you a woman who wants a baby of her own but doesn’t have a man, the time for a relationship, or the money to deal with a fertility clinic?

I am a tall, slender, clean and healthy, light-skinned black male who is very easygoing, friendly, artistic and sensual. I love sexual communication and love children, and therefore am very willing to be your personal sperm donor. I am not looking for money nor control of any child we make (and will sign any document you request to back that up): my interest is solely to provide you with intimate, sexual pleasure and to provide you with a child of your own to love and raise; whether we maintain any contact after conception or not is solely up to you. Serious responses will receive my pictures (clothed and naked) on request for your review, or we can skip the pictures and arrange no-pressure, no-commitment meetings so you can get a better sense of me before we do anything so you can determine if you would like to be impregnated by a man like myself.

It doesn’t matter to me what your age is, what your race is, or whether you are single, married, straight, bi or lesbian. I am very serious about this offer, so please only respond if you are a fertile woman who is at least curious and who truly desires a child by a decent gentleman. When you respond, please include a picture (clothed is fine) or description of yourself, and we will go forward from there.

Money Down the Drain

November 21, 2006

I’ve done more than my share of traveling around the country. In most cities where I have checked (which would be most cities where I have been), the daily newspapers don’t run escort ads in their classifieds. That’s usually part of the alternative tabloid scene, or in many cases, simply not part of the landscape at all.

A notable exception to this just happens to be my very own home town. The Tacoma News Tribune has, to the best of my knowledge, always run classifieds for “Adult Services”. Seems odd for a rag that bills itself as a “family newspaper”. But then again, pooners are part of the family too, right? (Sadly, that is all too true. But then, that’s another story.)

And so, for most of my pooning lifetime, the TNT has been one of my primary sources of professional companionship. That covers a period of, oh, let’s say a little less than 20 years, off and on.

In various conversations that I have had with providers, I have learned that the Adult Classifieds in the TNT are not cheap. A one line ad starts at around $220 for a week, and a display ad, like one or two of the agencies sometimes run, can be $450 or more. (Any providers who can correct these admittedly outdated figures, please speak up. Kristy? LoveLee?) So, do the math. Once upon a time, when the TNT was running 20 or 25 ads each day, they were raking in around $4-6K per week by pandering to the horny masses.

Enter Craig Newmark. All of a sudden, escort ads are free, nearly instantaneous, and include photos. If you are a newsprint pimp — hawking an obsolete medium for exorbitant prices — you’re fucked. Today’s TNT contains 5 escort ads. Four of them are one-liners. Do some more math. The TNT has lost somewhere in the neighborhood of $250K in business annually, give or take.

And, arguably, the number of providers is growing. Now, that could be in part because Craigslist has lowered the barrier to entry and encouraged ladies to be indie right from the git-go, vs. starting out with an agency (which present barriers all their own, whether they know it or not). Or it could just be a logical result of general population growth. But whatever the case may be, there’s a lot of money being left on the table. And our numbers so far are just for Tacoma, which ranks something like 150th on the list of American cities.

Yesterday’s Craigslist ERS section for Tacoma has 69 ads. Yes, lots are repeats. But then, by now the spam has been flagged out of the mix, too. Cut the number by three fourths. Figure $5 a pop. Multiply by 365, then multiply again by 150. Round numbers — VERY round numbers — I realize. But I think you get the idea.

Craig, WTF are you thinking?

… especially when they are poised to pack their fudge. There’s just something about a girl with Big Wood. And — oh my! — doesn’t this add a new spin to the concept of “full service”?

Resistance was futile, I had to request a pic. And lookey-lookey what I got back. Her “most recent photo” is, in fact, a high school senior yearbook photo. And a cute one, at that!
Perhaps the best part of all… by using a bit of sleuthery that I developed over this last summer, I was able to check not only that she is almost certainly 18 years old, but also that this photo does, in fact, belong to the young lady who owns the email address. In other words, she’s real.

And she’s taking bids? Can you imagine what this would fetch if it were allowed on eBay?

ROB Reduction

November 15, 2006

Maybe it’s a poor strategy for first-rate pooning, but I normally don’t call out-of-towners. When I see a non-local area code on CL, I just move on to the next ad. I know I am missing out on a lot of great pussy, but I also know that I am reducing my risk of having a bad experience, as well. I haven’t been straight-up ROBbed in eons, and I’ve only had a small handful of less-than-great experiences lately. Why mess with success?

The Internet has introduced a new dimension to the escort business: accountability. Hobbyists look out for each other these days, by posting reviews and ROB alerts. Habitual rip-offs can still stay afloat for quite awhile by preying upon the unwary and the uninformed, but the pool of potential marks has got to be smaller than it once was, thanks to pooner networking. Most importantly, the pool of likely victims no longer includes me.

In this environment, a provider’s reputation within a local area has a big impact on her overall business, her ability to attract and hang on to regulars, and on the quality of her new clients. I would have to say that the savvy providers, along with the newer ones who are smart enough to seek the counsel of the veterans, are aware that the Internet has improved their circumstances as much as it has those of the hobbyist. It follows from this that in a particular city, a provider who values her career will look at her self as a stakeholder in the local scene. She won’t want to mess with her own success, and she has fewer reasons to move from place to place. Why walk away from a reputation that takes time and effort to establish?

And then there are the itinerants. To be sure, lots of perfectly good providers travel for business. Particularly in the case of nearby cities like Seattle and Portland, or say, Phoenix and Tucson, often enough there are reputable providers who are merely chasing a little extra business. And for the ones with solid reputations, the Internet enables them to pack their reputations along for the trip.

But ROBs travel, too. And the “just lay there” types. And the ones with prodigiously long lists of “NOs”. The ones with aggressive pimps. The ones with bogus photos in their ads. Lots of the undesirables travel, because they have a host of good reasons. Even the well reviewed traveling girls have higher prices, almost universally, because they have higher expenses and because they have an inflated sense of their own value. Indeed, they often think that the fact they are “on the road” makes them more glamorous, more “special”, compared to a local. Speaking of “special”, they don’t run specials, as a rule. And in my book, any or all of this that might happen to be true makes them less special, and less worthy of my pooning dollar.

I’m not a high roller. I seek value. So give me a local girl, every time.

ATTN: Rachel (in Tacoma)

LOOK OUTSIDE NOW AND THEN!

Be Careful Out There

November 9, 2006

It’s all but guaranteed: if you have been in the Hobby for any length of time, you’ve been ripped off. It’s never pleasant, but usually nobody gets hurt. If this story from California becomes a trend, that could be changing soon.

The 55-year-old Castro Valley man responded Friday to a prostitution advertisement on Craigslist.org and agreed to meet a woman at an apartment complex on Civic Center Drive, Detective Bill Veteran said.

But when he arrived at the complex about 9:30 p.m., he was accosted by two men who jumped him as he exited the elevator, the detective said. They demanded his belongings, punched him several times in the face and then stole the $200 he brought for the prostitute, Veteran said.

Leave it to the always enterprising criminal element to release a cover version of an old classic. If you think about it, it’s surprising that it took this long. Craigslist has always been a fertile field for ROBs, for the same reason that it is attractive to newbie providers — because of its anonymity and low barrier to entry. But now the thief no longer need be a woman. And if a hobbyist doesn’t insist on telephone contact, there need not even be a female accomplice.

Watch out, I don’t think this is the last time we will see this sort of thing.
