Liquid Slime

February 27, 2007

Many years ago, the word ‘pimp’ was an obscenity, not to be uttered in polite company. Today, it’s part of the trendy slang lexicon of ignorant youth who have only the vaguest of notions about the word’s actual connotations. And that includes a great many — otherwise bright — young females who would blanch at the suggestion that women are subhumans who should be treated like property.

How could this happen? One word: hip-hop. A pox on our land if ever there was one, but that’s a matter for another blog on another day. But, in a nutshell, that’s the short answer. Hip-hop culture, among it’s vast array of offenses against our people in general and our youth in particular, has conceived and relentlessly promoted the idea that anything and everything having to do with pimps is cool.

I’m pleased to tell you that I’m not the only one who is saying “Enough!” And it’s about goddam time, too.

If only some of the young women out there had a clue. Just one fucking clue. Because there are only two things that the rap thugs understand — money and pussy. Cut them off from one or the other, and they will fall in line pretty quickly. Are you listening, girls?

You know, i’m actually not in agreement on this. I’ve always been an active member of the counter-culture and there’s no sign of that stopping even now in my 40’s. I remember the punk/American hardcore scene of the ’80’s, it was filled with some pretty inappropriate, offensive and violent stuff and we all came out alright.

There were bands like Dead Kennedy’s (“I Kill Children”, “Kill The Poor”), Jerry’s Kids, The Canabanoids, Retard Bus, The Crucifucks, The Hard-Ons, Drunk Injuns, Circle Jerks, Jodie Foster’s Army (JFA)…

How about the original line-up of The Mentors with El Duce on drums/vocals and Sickie Wifebeater on guitar? Their stuff was very offensive/aggressive toward women, with stuff such as “My Woman From Sodom”, “Going Through Your Purse”, “Rock ‘em, Sock ‘em”, “The Four F Club”, to name but a few of the classics. Man, i’m not even going to mention the notorious GG Alin(do some research on that psycho, his live shows were a hoot!).

We all came out just fine. I don’t walk around defecating on people (as GG Alin did almost every show) or setting women on fire (as the singer from Fang did). I was/am deeply embedded in this counter-culture and i’ve never even been arrested -this nigga came out totally okay.

My thought is that young gals wrapped up in hip-hop culture ultimately know what’s right, wrong, good and bad. They may use the word “pimp”, but it’s used as slang totally different from it’s true meaning. If confronted by a real pimp, I think most would figure it out and reject it. There are always a few who will fall for the charade, but then there are always folks who fall into bad stuff in every walk of life, right?

Counter-culture has always come under great suspicion – “they’re corrupting our youth!!”. Most of the hip-hop scene is just youth posturing and talk, just like any other “youth” scene. Now that i’m older I can understand the concern, but I really wouldn’t lose sleep over it.

That’s my $1. Save it or give it to charity.

You honestly believe that the counterculture didn’t fuck up baby boomers? Dude, you dropped one too many hits of windowpane.

Virus Writer: The difference is that the punk movement affected mostly music and fashion trends. It did not translate into massive legions of kids trying to imitate Sid Vicious and Jonny Rotten. They’d go punk in high school, perhaps maintain it through college, go to a few “Bad Brains” shows and then graduate, remove the safety pin from their ear and suck it up and get “normal” again.

The problem is rap culture COMBINED with the fact that these kids were raised by selfish baby boomers. Indulged at every turn, given no moral guidance whatsoever, and now they graduate college speaking like they are Eminem (word!).

The difference is that baby boomers came out of college completely stoned, but still capable of spelling, speaking properly and knowing how to write a paragraph without MS Word inserting a bunch of red and green underlines into it.

Sure, I sound like an angry parent in 1953, all concerned about black music having an impact on my kids. There is nothing I can do about it other than a few basics:

    - Correct my kid’s speech as he learns the ghetto language in school

    - Sideways baseball hat? Fine, but it comes off when he is indoors.

    - If I have a pre-teen girl, she will not be allowed to have clothes that say “do me” like all of her friends may get to wear.

    - Teach my girl to respect herself, even if it looks like no one around her seems willing to.

    - cell phone? Uh-uh. Not unless he/she can afford it on their own. I see kids text messaging each other when they are IN THE SAME ROOM with each other. I can not believe that parents insist on letting their kids take them to school. Makes no sense at all.

    - Lesson learned from Chappelle’s show: If my son decides to get all “ghetto”, I’m going to drive him to Compton, open the door in front of some bad-ass homeys and tell him to get out and have fun for the day.
